“The RAIB’s investigation will seek to find out how the collision happened and make any necessary safety recommendations. Our current understanding is that, at around 07:15 hrs, the 06:41 Aberystwyth to Birmingham New Street service departed from Aberystwyth and collided head-on with the 06:34 Shrewsbury to Aberystwyth service. The collision occurred at Talerddig, between Aberdovey and Machynlleth in Mid Wales.
“Approximately 13 people have been injured, including the drivers of both trains. Six people have been taken to hospital for treatment.
“Our inspectors will be examining the wreckage, interviewing witnesses and gathering evidence to help them to understand what happened. We will also be reviewing CCTV footage, data recorders and other relevant material.
“The investigation is likely to take several months to complete. The RAIB will issue updates on our progress on a regular basis.”
The collision has caused significant disruption to rail services in the area. Passengers are advised to check with their train operator for the latest information.
