Government of Canada and Lakehead University Launch Initiative to Prevent Youth Dating Violence
Ottawa, Ontario – November 1, 2024 – The Government of Canada and Lakehead University announced today a new partnership to prevent youth dating violence.
The initiative, funded through the Public Health Agency of Canada’s Healthy Relationships Initiative, will provide $1 million over two years to Lakehead University to develop and implement a comprehensive program to address youth dating violence in Thunder Bay, Ontario.
The program will include:
- An education campaign to raise awareness of the signs of dating violence and promote healthy relationships
- Training for educators, youth workers, and community members on how to identify and respond to dating violence
- Support services for youth who have experienced or are at risk of experiencing dating violence
“Youth dating violence is a serious problem in Canada,” said the Honourable Patty Hajdu, Minister of Health. “This program will help us to better understand the issue and develop effective ways to prevent it.”
“Lakehead University is committed to working with our community partners to create a safe and healthy environment for youth,” said Dr. Moira McPherson, President and Vice-Chancellor of Lakehead University. “This program will help us to build on our existing efforts to prevent youth dating violence.”
Youth dating violence is a form of relationship abuse that can involve physical, emotional, sexual, or psychological harm. It can have a devastating impact on the lives of young people, affecting their physical and mental health, their academic performance, and their future relationships.
The Government of Canada is committed to preventing youth dating violence. In 2018, the government launched the Healthy Relationships Initiative, a $10 million investment to support projects that prevent and respond to dating violence.
The initiative with Lakehead University is one of several projects funded through the Healthy Relationships Initiative. Other projects include:
- A national campaign to raise awareness of the signs of dating violence and promote healthy relationships
- Training for law enforcement officers and judges on how to respond to dating violence
- Support services for youth who have experienced or are at risk of experiencing dating violence
The Government of Canada is also working with provinces and territories to develop and implement legislation to address youth dating violence.
