SAULT STE. MARIE, ON — Today, the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, the Honourable Chrystia Freeland, highlighted the completion of 108 new affordable homes at Sault Ste. Marie’s Royal Canadian Legion.
“Every Canadian deserves a safe and affordable place to call home,” said Deputy Prime Minister Freeland. “Our government is committed to working with our partners to build more affordable housing for Canadians who need it most.”
The new homes are part of a larger project to redevelop the Royal Canadian Legion building into a mixed-use development that will include affordable housing, commercial space, and a new legion hall. The project is being funded by the federal government, the province of Ontario, and the City of Sault Ste. Marie.
“These new homes will make a real difference in the lives of many people in Sault Ste. Marie,” said Terry Sheehan, Member of Parliament for Sault Ste. Marie. “They will provide safe and affordable housing for seniors, families, and individuals who need it most.”
The new homes are a mix of one- and two-bedroom units. They are all wheelchair accessible and feature energy-efficient appliances and fixtures. The building also includes a common room, a fitness centre, and a rooftop terrace.
“We are thrilled to be able to offer these new affordable homes to the people of Sault Ste. Marie,” said David Orazietti, President of the Royal Canadian Legion Sault Ste. Marie Branch 25. “This project will help to revitalize our downtown core and provide much-needed housing for our community.”
The construction of these new homes is part of the Government of Canada’s National Housing Strategy, which is a $72 billion, 10-year plan to build and repair more than 1 million homes for Canadians in need.
“Our government is committed to building a more inclusive and affordable Canada,” said Deputy Prime Minister Freeland. “These new homes are a step in the right direction, and we will continue to work with our partners to make sure that everyone has a safe and affordable place to call home.”
