UN rights office warns of ‘dangerous tipping point’ as abuses surge in Sudan
GENEVA (17 February 2023) – The UN Human Rights Office on Friday warned that Sudan is at a “dangerous tipping point” as reports of human rights violations and abuses surge amid political instability, economic hardship and intercommunal violence.
In a statement, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, expressed deep concern over the deteriorating situation in Sudan, where at least 114 people have been killed and hundreds injured in recent weeks.
“The increasing use of excessive force, arbitrary arrests and detentions, and restrictions on freedom of expression and assembly are deeply alarming,” Türk said. “These violations are not only unacceptable but also risk further destabilizing the country and causing even greater suffering.”
The High Commissioner called on the Sudanese authorities to take immediate steps to end the violence, respect human rights and the rule of law, and hold those responsible for violations accountable.
He also urged the authorities to engage in meaningful dialogue with all stakeholders, including civil society and opposition groups, to address the root causes of the crisis and find a peaceful way forward.
“It is crucial that all parties refrain from violence and work together to build a more just, equitable and prosperous Sudan,” Türk said.
The UN Human Rights Office has documented a sharp increase in human rights violations and abuses in Sudan since the military coup in October 2021. These abuses include:
- The use of excessive force against protesters, resulting in dozens of deaths and hundreds of injuries
- Arbitrary arrests and detentions of political activists, human rights defenders and journalists
- Restrictions on freedom of expression and assembly, including the closure of media outlets and the banning of protests
- Widespread impunity for human rights violations
The High Commissioner warned that the current situation in Sudan is “unsustainable” and that the country is at a “dangerous tipping point.”
“I urge the Sudanese authorities to take immediate action to reverse this downward spiral and to put the country on a path towards peace, democracy and respect for human rights,” Türk said.
