UN Rights Office Warns of ‘Dangerous Tipping Point’ as Abuses Surge in Sudan
February 18, 2025
GENEVA (Reuters) – The United Nations human rights office warned on Friday of a “dangerous tipping point” in Sudan, where it said extrajudicial killings, arbitrary arrests and torture had surged in recent months.
The UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) said in a statement that the deteriorating situation in Sudan “raises serious concerns about the country’s stability, security and respect for human rights.”
The UNHRC cited reports of at least 100 extrajudicial killings, 500 arbitrary arrests and 200 cases of torture since the military took power in a coup in October 2023.
“The impunity for serious human rights violations, including killing and torture, is fueling a cycle of violence that is driving the country towards a dangerous tipping point,” said Nada Al-Nashif, UN Deputy High Commissioner for Human Rights.
The UNHRC called on the military-led government to “immediately end all forms of excessive use of force, arbitrary arrests and torture” and to release political prisoners.
“The situation in Sudan is extremely worrying and requires immediate action to prevent further bloodshed and human suffering,” said Al-Nashif.
The UNHRC also called on the international community to “respond urgently to the deteriorating human rights situation in Sudan and to support the Sudanese people in their legitimate aspirations for democracy, peace and prosperity.”
The military government in Sudan has denied allegations of human rights abuses and has accused the UN of bias.
Background:
- Sudan has been in turmoil since the military overthrew a civilian-led government in October 2023.
- The military has cracked down on protests against its rule, leading to widespread human rights abuses.
- The UN and other international organizations have condemned the military’s actions and called for an end to the violence.
- The UN Human Rights Council is scheduled to hold a special session on Sudan on March 2, 2025.
