UN rights office warns of ‘dangerous tipping point’ as abuses surge in Sudan
18 February 2025
GENEVA (Reuters) – The United Nations human rights office on Friday warned of a “dangerous tipping point” in Sudan as reports of arbitrary arrests, torture and extrajudicial killings surge amid a deepening political crisis.
“We are deeply alarmed by the escalating violence and human rights violations in Sudan,” said Jeremy Laurence, a spokesperson for the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights.
“Arbitrary arrests, torture, and extrajudicial killings have become commonplace, and the rule of law is being systematically dismantled.”
Laurence said that the rights office had received credible reports of at least 100 people being killed by security forces since the start of the year, and that thousands more had been arbitrarily arrested and detained.
“These abuses are not isolated incidents,” he said. “They are part of a systematic campaign of repression by the authorities against anyone who dares to speak out or protest.”
The UN rights office said that the situation in Sudan had reached a “dangerous tipping point” and that the international community must take urgent action to prevent further bloodshed.
“We urge the Sudanese authorities to immediately end the violence and human rights violations, and to hold those responsible to account,” Laurence said.
“We also call on the international community to increase its pressure on the Sudanese authorities to respect human rights and the rule of law.”
The political crisis in Sudan began in October 2023 when the military staged a coup and ousted the civilian-led government. The coup has been met with widespread protests, which have been brutally suppressed by the security forces.
The UN rights office has repeatedly condemned the violence and human rights abuses in Sudan and has called on the authorities to respect the rule of law and the rights of the Sudanese people.
