UN rights office warns of ‘dangerous tipping point’ as abuses surge in Sudan
18 February 2025
GENEVA (Reuters) – The United Nations human rights office on Friday warned of a “dangerous tipping point” in Sudan, where it said there had been a surge in human rights abuses since a military coup last year.
In a report, the office of UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet documented a “pattern of serious human rights violations” including arbitrary arrests, torture, ill-treatment, and excessive use of force against protesters.
“Sudan is at a dangerous tipping point,” Bachelet said in a statement. “The military coup has created a climate of fear and repression, and the human rights situation is rapidly deteriorating.”
The report said that at least 113 people have been killed and more than 7,000 arrested in connection with protests against the military government. It also documented cases of sexual violence, including rape, against women and girls.
The report comes as Sudan faces a deepening political and economic crisis. The military coup in October 2021 has led to widespread protests and international condemnation. The country is also facing a severe economic crisis, with inflation soaring and food and fuel shortages.
The UN human rights office called on the Sudanese authorities to end the crackdown on dissent, release all political prisoners, and respect the right to peaceful assembly. It also urged the international community to take action to support human rights in Sudan.
“The situation in Sudan is a serious threat to international peace and security,” Bachelet said. “The international community must act now to prevent further bloodshed and to support the Sudanese people in their struggle for democracy and human rights.”
The Sudanese government has not yet commented on the UN report.
