The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF) has announced the temporary suspension of poultry meat imports from Argentina. This measure is being taken to prevent the introduction of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) into Japan.
Background
On February 15, 2025, an outbreak of HPAI was confirmed in a poultry farm in Argentina. The World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) has been notified of the outbreak.
HPAI is a highly contagious viral disease that can cause severe illness and death in poultry. It can also spread to humans, although human infections are rare.
Suspension of Imports
In order to prevent the introduction of HPAI into Japan, MAFF has decided to temporarily suspend the import of poultry meat and poultry products from Argentina with immediate effect. The suspension will remain in place until the situation in Argentina has stabilized.
Exceptions
The following products are exempt from the suspension:
- Poultry meat and poultry products that are heat-treated to an internal temperature of 70°C or higher
- Poultry meat and poultry products that are imported for scientific research or diagnostic purposes
Other Measures
In addition to the suspension of imports, MAFF is also taking the following measures to prevent the introduction of HPAI into Japan:
- Strengthening quarantine measures at ports and airports
- Conducting surveillance for HPAI in poultry farms and wild birds
