The governments of Canada and the Yukon sign an agreement to address unsheltered homelessness

February 18, 2025

Today, the governments of Canada and the Yukon signed a bilateral agreement to provide $35 million over five years to address unsheltered homelessness in the territory. This investment will help create new housing and support services, as well as provide outreach and prevention services to those experiencing or at risk of homelessness.

“Everyone deserves a safe and affordable place to call home,” said the Honourable Ahmed Hussen, Minister of Housing and Diversity and Inclusion. “This agreement will help us make a real difference in the lives of those experiencing unsheltered homelessness in the Yukon.”

The agreement will fund the following initiatives:

  • New housing: The construction of 50 new affordable housing units for people experiencing or at risk of homelessness.
  • Support services: The provision of support services, such as case management, mental health and addiction treatment, and job training, to help people experiencing homelessness get back on their feet.
  • Outreach and prevention services: The implementation of outreach and prevention services to help people who are at risk of homelessness avoid falling into homelessness.

“This agreement is a significant step forward in our efforts to end unsheltered homelessness in the Yukon,” said the Honourable John Streicker, Minister of Health and Social Services. “We are committed to working with our federal partners to ensure that everyone in the Yukon has a place to call home.”

The agreement is part of the Government of Canada’s National Housing Strategy, which is a 10-year, $72 billion plan to address the housing needs of Canadians. The strategy includes a number of initiatives to help people experiencing or at risk of homelessness, such as the Reaching Home program and the Homelessness Partnering Strategy.

The Government of the Yukon is also committed to addressing homelessness in the territory. In 2022, the government announced a $10 million investment in affordable housing and support services for people experiencing homelessness.

The signing of this agreement is a positive step forward in the fight to end unsheltered homelessness in the Yukon. By working together, the governments of Canada and the Yukon can make a real difference in the lives of those who are experiencing or at risk of homelessness.
