Government of Canada Announces Support for Black Entrepreneurs and Businesses in Northern Ontario
February 18, 2025 – Nipissing-Timiskaming MP Anthony Lapointe announced today that the Government of Canada is investing \$5 million to support Black entrepreneurs and businesses across Northern Ontario. The funding will be provided through FedNor, the federal government’s regional economic development agency.
“Black entrepreneurs and businesses play a vital role in our economy and in the vibrant social fabric of our communities,” said MP Lapointe. “This investment will help them grow and succeed, creating jobs and opportunities for all Northern Ontarians.”
The funding will be used to provide a range of services to Black entrepreneurs and businesses, including:
- Access to capital, business training, and mentorship
- Support for innovative projects and initiatives
- Assistance with marketing and capacity building
“This funding is a game-changer for Black entrepreneurs and businesses in Northern Ontario,” said Charles Ngwesse, President of the Black Business Network of Northern Ontario. “It will provide the resources and support we need to succeed and contribute to the economic prosperity of our communities.”
The Government of Canada has made supporting Black entrepreneurs and businesses a priority. In 2021, the government launched the Black Entrepreneurship Program, a \$221 million investment over five years to support Black entrepreneurs across Canada.
“We know that there are systemic barriers that Black entrepreneurs and businesses face,” said the Honourable Patty Hajdu, Minister of Indigenous Services and Northern Affairs. “This investment will help to level the playing field and create opportunities for Black entrepreneurs to thrive.”
The Black Entrepreneurship Program is part of the Government of Canada’s broader plan to promote economic growth and prosperity in Northern Ontario. The government is investing in a range of initiatives to support businesses, create jobs, and improve the quality of life for all Northern Ontarians.
