Berlin – Gerhart Baum, a prominent figure in German politics who served as Federal Minister of the Interior from 1978 to 1982, has passed away at the age of 94. Baum died peacefully in his sleep at his home in Bonn.
Baum, a member of the Free Democratic Party (FDP), played a significant role in German politics during the 1970s and 1980s. As Interior Minister, he implemented a number of progressive reforms, including the introduction of a more liberal asylum law and the establishment of the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution (BfV), Germany’s domestic intelligence agency.
Baum was also known for his commitment to human rights and civil liberties. He was a key figure in the establishment of the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg, France.
After leaving the Interior Ministry, Baum served as a member of the German Bundestag, the country’s parliament, from 1982 to 1994. He remained active in politics throughout his life, working as an advisor to various organizations and speaking out on issues of human rights and democracy.
Baum’s passing has been met with expressions of grief and respect from across the political spectrum.
“Gerhart Baum was a great German and a true liberal,” said German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier. “He will be remembered as a defender of freedom and democracy.”
Chancellor Olaf Scholz also paid tribute to Baum, calling him “a tireless advocate for human rights and civil liberties. His legacy will continue to inspire us.”
Baum is survived by his wife, Gertrud, and their two children.
