Government of Canada invests in sustaining system-wide search and rescue management
Ottawa, Ontario – February 14, 2025 – The Government of Canada is investing $24 million over five years to sustain the National Search and Rescue (SAR) Secretariat, which plays a critical role in coordinating and managing SAR operations across the country.
The Secretariat is a central hub for SAR information and coordination, providing support to SAR authorities, responders, and volunteers. It also develops and maintains national SAR standards, policies, and procedures.
“This investment will help ensure that the National SAR Secretariat continues to provide the essential support that SAR responders and volunteers rely on,” said the Honourable Patty Hajdu, Minister of Indigenous Services and Northern Affairs Canada. “By sustaining the Secretariat, we are investing in the safety and well-being of all Canadians.”
The Secretariat is a key component of Canada’s SAR system, which is responsible for responding to an average of 12,000 SAR incidents each year. The Secretariat’s work helps to ensure that SAR operations are conducted in a safe, efficient, and effective manner.
“The National SAR Secretariat is a vital part of our SAR system,” said Gregory Thomas, Director General, National SAR Secretariat. “This investment will allow us to continue to provide the support that SAR responders and volunteers need to save lives.”
The investment will be used to support the Secretariat’s ongoing operations, including:
- Developing and maintaining national SAR standards, policies, and procedures
- Providing training and support to SAR responders and volunteers
- Coordinating and managing SAR operations
- Conducting research and development on SAR technologies and techniques
“This investment is a recognition of the important role that the National SAR Secretariat plays in keeping Canadians safe,” said Bill Blair, Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness. “By supporting the Secretariat, we are investing in the safety and security of all Canadians.”
The Government of Canada is committed to ensuring that Canada has a robust and effective SAR system. This investment in the National SAR Secretariat is an important step towards achieving that goal.
