Ottawa, Ontario – February 14, 2025 – The Government of Canada announced today a new initiative to support the scale-up and growth of manufacturers in the electric vehicle (EV) sector. The initiative will provide $500 million in funding over the next five years to help Canadian companies develop and commercialize their EV technologies.
“The EV sector is a major growth area for Canada,” said the Honourable François-Philippe Champagne, Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry. “This investment will help our manufacturers scale up their operations and compete globally, creating good jobs and economic growth for Canadians.”
The funding will be provided through the Strategic Innovation Fund (SIF), a program that supports research and development in key economic sectors. Eligible companies will be able to receive funding for projects that focus on the development of:

- Advanced manufacturing processes
- Battery storage and charging infrastructure
“This investment is a game-changer for the Canadian EV sector,” said Flavio Volpe, President and CEO of the Automotive Parts Manufacturers’ Association (APMA). “It will give our companies the resources they need to develop and commercialize their innovative technologies, and to compete globally.”
The EV sector is a major growth area for Canada. In 2022, over 100,000 EVs were sold in Canada, a 60% increase over the previous year. The Government of Canada has set a target of having all new passenger vehicles sold in Canada to be zero-emission by 2035.
