Geneva – The UN human rights office on Tuesday condemned the continuing Israeli military operation in the occupied West Bank, which has resulted in the deaths of at least 10 Palestinians, including a child, and the injury of hundreds more.
“We are deeply concerned by the excessive use of force by Israeli security forces during this operation, which has led to a number of avoidable deaths and injuries,” said Liz Throssell, a spokesperson for the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR).
Throssell said that OHCHR had received reports that Israeli forces had used live ammunition, rubber-coated bullets, and tear gas against Palestinian protesters and civilians in a number of locations in the West Bank, including Nablus, Jenin, and Ramallah.
“We call on the Israeli authorities to conduct a prompt, thorough, and impartial investigation into all allegations of excessive use of force, and to hold those responsible to account,” Throssell said.
She added that OHCHR was also concerned about the detention of hundreds of Palestinians, including children, during the operation.
“We remind the Israeli authorities that international law prohibits the arbitrary arrest and detention of individuals, and that all detainees must be treated with dignity and respect,” Throssell said.
OHCHR called on the Israeli authorities to end the military operation and to respect the human rights of all Palestinians.
“The ongoing violence in the occupied West Bank is unacceptable and must stop,” Throssell said. “We urge all parties to exercise restraint and to work towards a peaceful resolution of the conflict.”
