UK Strongly Condemns Tragic Death of World Food Programme Staff Member in Houthi Detention
13th February 2025
The United Kingdom has strongly condemned the tragic death of a World Food Programme (WFP) staff member who was detained by the Houthi rebels in Yemen.
In a statement delivered at the United Nations Security Council, UK Ambassador to the UN Barbara Woodward called the incident “a senseless and preventable tragedy.”
“We extend our deepest condolences to the family and colleagues of the victim,” Woodward said. “Their loss is a profound reminder of the human cost of this conflict and the urgent need for a political solution.”
According to the WFP, the staff member, a Yemeni national named Mohamed Ali Abu Ali, was arrested by Houthi forces in the Hodeidah Governorate in May 2022. He was allegedly subjected to arbitrary detention and torture while in custody.
“We are appalled by the reports that Mr. Abu Ali was detained without charge for nearly two years,” Woodward said. “His death is a stain on the Houthi authorities, who must be held accountable for their actions.”
The UK called on the Houthis to release all other detained WFP staff members and humanitarian workers without further delay. They also called on the Houthi authorities to allow unhindered access to humanitarian assistance throughout Yemen.
“The continued detention of humanitarian workers is unacceptable,” Woodward said. “It is vital that they are able to operate freely and safely in order to provide much-needed aid to the millions of Yemenis who depend on it.”
The Security Council is expected to adopt a resolution condemning the Houthis’ actions and calling for the release of all detained humanitarian workers.
The UK’s statement comes amidst ongoing efforts to secure a ceasefire and negotiate a political solution to the conflict in Yemen. The UK has been a leading advocate for peace and stability in Yemen and has provided significant humanitarian aid to the country.
