Politically Right-Wing Motivated Homicides Since 1990
Berlin (hib) – Since German reunification in 1990, there have been 154 right-wing politically motivated homicides in Germany. This is the result of a response from the Federal Ministry of the Interior (BMI) to a small question from the Left Party parliamentary group (Drs. 20/5669).
According to the BMI, the highest number of right-wing extremist homicides was recorded in 2011 and 2012, with seven and nine cases respectively. In the years 2015 to 2021, an average of 2.6 homicides with a right-wing extremist background occurred per year. In 2022, one right-wing extremist homicide was recorded.
The BMI further states that a total of 311 victims are known in connection with the 154 homicides. In 301 cases, the victims were individuals, in ten cases the victims were several people. In addition, there are four cases in which there was a failed assassination attempt.
The majority of the victims were German citizens (287). There were also 14 victims with foreign nationality and ten victims with unknown nationality.
According to the BMI, 103 of the 154 homicides were committed in the new federal states (former GDR). In the old federal states (former FRG), 51 cases were recorded.
The BMI also states that 126 of the 154 homicides were committed by known right-wing extremists. In 28 cases, the perpetrators were unknown or their political orientation could not be determined.
The BMI emphasizes that the figures are based on the state of knowledge of the Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA) and may be subject to change due to ongoing investigations.
The Left Party parliamentary group had asked the federal government, among other things, to provide information on the number of right-wing extremist homicides committed since reunification and on the number of victims in these cases.
