Airing Climate Justice in Costa Rica on World Radio Day
SAN JOSE, Costa Rica, Feb 13 2025 (IPS) – On the occasion of World Radio Day 2025, celebrated on 13 February under the theme “Radio and Climate Change,” a special program will be broadcast from Costa Rica to highlight the importance of this medium in promoting climate justice and sustainable development.
The program, entitled “Airing Climate Justice,” will be produced by Radio Nederland Wereldomroep (RNW Media), the international public broadcaster of the Netherlands, in collaboration with the Costa Rican radio station Radio Universidad de Costa Rica (UCR).
The program will feature interviews with experts, activists, and community members from Costa Rica and around the world, who will share their perspectives on the role of radio in raising awareness about climate change, promoting mitigation and adaptation strategies, and amplifying the voices of those most affected by the climate crisis.
“Radio is a powerful tool for reaching communities and empowering people to take action on climate change,” said RNW Media’s Director General, Lex Oomkes. “On World Radio Day, we want to highlight the important role that radio stations can play in promoting climate justice and sustainable development.”
Oomkes will be interviewed for the program by Latin America radio correspondent PJ Tobia on the steps taken by RNW Media to make its content more accessible to audiences in the Global South, including the recent launch of a Spanish-language podcast on the climate crisis.
Costa Rica is an ideal location for the World Radio Day broadcast, as the country is a global leader in environmental protection and sustainable development. Costa Rica has been carbon neutral since 2014, and is committed to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.
The country is also home to a vibrant and diverse radio landscape, with over 100 radio stations broadcasting in a variety of languages and formats. Radio remains an important source of information and entertainment for Costa Ricans, particularly in rural and remote areas.
The “Airing Climate Justice” program will be broadcast on Radio UCR on 13 February at 12:00 pm local time (5:00 pm GMT). The program will also be available online at the RNW Media website and on the RNW Media app.
“We are honored to be partnering with RNW Media to produce this special program on World Radio Day,” said Rigoberto Rodriguez, Director of Radio UCR. “Radio is a vital part of Costa Rican society, and we believe that it has a key role to play in promoting climate justice and sustainable development.”
World Radio Day was proclaimed by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in 2012, and is celebrated every year on 13 February. The day is an opportunity to celebrate the power of radio and its ability to inform, educate, and entertain people around the world.
