Ottawa, Ontario – Today, on the International Day Against the Use of Child Soldiers, Canada reaffirms its unwavering commitment to ending the recruitment and use of children in armed conflict.
Child soldiers are children under the age of 18 who have been recruited or used by armed forces, groups, or non-state actors in any capacity, including as combatants, cooks, porters, spies, or sex slaves.
The recruitment and use of child soldiers is a grave violation of international law and human rights. Children who are forced to fight or work in armed conflict face immense physical, psychological, and emotional harm. They are often subjected to violence, abuse, and exploitation.
Canada condemns the use of child soldiers in the strongest possible terms. We call on all parties to armed conflict to respect the rights of children and to take all necessary measures to prevent their recruitment and use.
Canada is committed to working with our international partners to end the use of child soldiers.
