An Airman from the 31st Medical Group at Aviano Air Base, Italy, helped save the life of a skier who suffered a cardiac arrest while skiing in the Italian Alps.

Airman 1st Class Aiden Smith, a medical technician, was skiing with friends when he saw a man collapse on the slopes. Smith immediately rushed to the man’s side and began performing CPR.

“I saw the man fall and knew I had to act quickly,” said Smith. “I started CPR and continued until the ski patrol arrived.”

The ski patrol arrived minutes later and used an automated external defibrillator (AED) to shock the man’s heart. The man was then transported to a nearby hospital, where he was treated for a cardiac arrhythmia.

The man, who was identified as a 50-year-old Italian tourist, is now recovering in the hospital. Doctors said that Smith’s quick actions saved his life.

“I’m just glad I was able to help,” said Smith. “It’s a reminder that we all have a responsibility to look out for each other.”

Smith’s actions are a testament to the dedication and professionalism of Airmen around the world. They are always ready to serve and protect, even when they are off duty.
