Statement by Minister Hajdu on the changes to operating procedures related to processing requests under Jordan’s Principle
February 10, 2025
Ottawa, ON – The Honourable Patty Hajdu, Minister of Indigenous Services, issued the following statement today:
“Today, I am announcing changes to the operating procedures related to processing requests under Jordan’s Principle. These changes are the result of extensive consultations with First Nations, Inuit, and Métis organizations, as well as provincial and territorial governments.
Jordan’s Principle is a legal obligation for governments in Canada to provide equitable access to health and social services for First Nations children. It states that no First Nations child should be denied access to a service due to lack of funding or jurisdiction.
The changes to the operating procedures will make it easier for families to access services under Jordan’s Principle. They include:
- A single point of contact for families to make requests for services.
- A streamlined process for assessing and approving requests.
- Clear timelines for processing requests.
- Improved communication with families throughout the process.
These changes will help to ensure that First Nations children have timely access to the services they need.
I would like to thank the First Nations, Inuit, and Métis organizations, as well as the provincial and territorial governments, for their collaboration in developing these changes.
We are committed to working with all partners to ensure that Jordan’s Principle is fully implemented and that all First Nations children have access to the services they need to thrive.”
Background
Jordan’s Principle was first established in 2007 after the tragic death of Jordan River Anderson. Jordan was a First Nations child who died in hospital after waiting three years for funding approval for home-based care.
In 2016, the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal ruled that Jordan’s Principle is a legal obligation for governments in Canada. The Tribunal found that the federal government had discriminated against First Nations children by failing to provide them with equitable access to health and social services.
The Government of Canada has since committed to fully implementing Jordan’s Principle. The changes to the operating procedures announced today are part of this commitment.
