The UK government has announced that it will be extending the exemptions for driving licences and vehicle registration documents for Ukrainian nationals who have fled the war in their country.
The exemptions, which were due to expire on 31 March 2025, will now be extended until 30 June 2026. This will give Ukrainian nationals more time to adjust to living in the UK and to obtain the necessary documentation.
The government has also announced that it will be providing £10 million of funding to support Ukrainian refugees with the cost of driving lessons and theory tests.
Grant Shapps, the Transport Secretary, said:
“We are committed to supporting Ukrainian nationals who have been forced to flee their homes. These exemptions will give them more time to get the necessary documentation and to settle into life in the UK.”
The exemptions apply to Ukrainian nationals who have been issued with a driving licence or vehicle registration document in Ukraine. They will be able to use these documents in the UK for up to 12 months after their arrival.
The government is also working with the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) to ensure that Ukrainian nationals can obtain UK driving licences and vehicle registration documents as quickly as possible.
