Support for Ukrainians Continues as Government Extends Driving Licence and Vehicle Exemptions
10 February 2025 Department for Transport
The government is extending the exemptions for Ukrainian nationals driving in the UK, as part of ongoing support to those who have fled the war.
Under the previous arrangements, Ukrainian nationals were able to drive in the UK for up to 12 months on their Ukrainian driving licence. This exemption has now been extended for a further 12 months, until 11 May 2026.
In addition, Ukrainian nationals can now exchange their Ukrainian driving licence for a full UK driving licence without having to take a driving test. This exemption will also be in place until 11 May 2026.
The government has also extended the exemption for Ukrainian vehicles to display Ukrainian number plates for a further 12 months, until 11 May 2026.
These extensions will provide Ukrainian nationals with continued flexibility and freedom of movement in the UK, as they adjust to life in a new country.
Transport Secretary Mark Harper said:
“We are committed to supporting the people of Ukraine who have been forced to flee their homes. These extensions will provide practical support to those who have come to the UK, giving them the freedom to access employment, education and essential services.”
The government has also announced a number of other measures to support Ukrainians in the UK, including:
- A £50 million fund to help Ukrainian refugees with the cost of living
- A £20 million fund to support Ukrainians with mental health and well-being
- A £10 million fund to support Ukrainian children with education
The government is working closely with the Ukrainian government to ensure that these measures provide the necessary support to those who need it most.
