Blackburn Rovers 1-0 Wolves
Ben Brereton Diaz’s 20th goal of the season moved Blackburn Rovers up to fourth in the Championship as they sunk Wolves at Ewood Park.
The Chile international forward’s third goal in four matches was enough to extend Rovers’ unbeaten run to five games and keep their hopes of automatic promotion alive.
Brereton Diaz turned home Reda Khadra’s low cross from the right after 20 minutes, pouncing on a rare mistake by Wolves defender Max Kilman.
Wolves were lacklustre in the first half but improved after the break – substitute Fabio Silva forcing a fine save out of Thomas Kaminski – however Rovers defended resolutely to claim a vital victory.
Defeat means Wolves have now won just one of their last five games, dropping to ninth in the table and with their play-off hopes hanging in the balance.
Rovers started brightly and could have taken the lead inside the opening five minutes. Sam Gallagher found himself in space down the right and crossed for Brereton Diaz, who fired over from six yards.
Moments later, Harry Pickering tried his luck from distance and Brereton Diaz saw a shot deflected behind after good work from Khadra.
Rovers took the lead in the 20th minute after Khadra got away down the right and crossed low for Brereton Diaz to turn home.
Wolves struggled to create clear-cut chances in the first half, with Raul Jimenez seeing a header blocked and Adama Traore denied by a fine tackle from Daniel Ayala.
The visitors improved after the break and Fabio Silva could have levelled after turning his man on the edge of the area, only to see his shot well saved by Kaminski in the Rovers goal.
Rovers had chances to extend their lead on the counter-attack but Brereton Diaz was denied by a good block from Wolves captain Conor Coady, before Gallagher could only find the side-netting when clean through.
Wolves substitute Hwang Hee-chan came close with a curling effort which was pushed away by Kaminski, but Rovers held on to move back into the top six.
