Minister Fisher and AFN National Chief Reaffirm Partnership to Support First Nations Veterans

Ottawa, Ontario – February 8, 2025 – The Honourable Lawrence Fisher, Minister of Veterans Affairs and Associate Minister of National Defence, and Perry Bellegarde, National Chief of the Assembly of First Nations (AFN), met today to reaffirm their commitment to working together to support First Nations Veterans and their families.

“First Nations Veterans have made significant contributions to Canada’s military history and continue to serve our country with distinction,” said Minister Fisher. “Our government is committed to ensuring that First Nations Veterans have access to the same benefits and support as other Veterans.”

The Minister and National Chief discussed a number of initiatives to support First Nations Veterans, including:

  • Expanding access to mental health and wellness services
  • Increasing support for Veterans who are transitioning to civilian life
  • Improving awareness of Veterans benefits and services among First Nations communities

“First Nations Veterans deserve to be recognized and supported for their service to Canada,” said National Chief Bellegarde. “We are pleased to work with the Government of Canada to ensure that First Nations Veterans have access to the same benefits and services as other Veterans.”

The meeting is part of an ongoing dialogue between the Government of Canada and the AFN on issues related to First Nations Veterans. The two organizations are committed to working together to ensure that First Nations Veterans receive the support they need.
