The Department for Education has today announced the appointment of Sir Ian Bauckham as the permanent Chief Regulator of Ofqual.

Sir Ian has been the Interim Chief Regulator since September 2024, and has led Ofqual through a period of significant change, including the introduction of new qualifications and the development of a new regulatory framework.

Before joining Ofqual, Sir Ian was the Chief Executive of the Teaching Regulatory Agency (TRA). He has also held senior positions in the Department for Education and the Office for Standards in Education, Children’s Services and Skills (Ofsted).

Welcoming the appointment, Education Secretary Gavin Williamson said:

“I am delighted that Sir Ian has agreed to become the permanent Chief Regulator of Ofqual. He has a wealth of experience in education and regulation, and I am confident that he will continue to lead Ofqual with distinction.

“Ofqual plays a vital role in ensuring that our qualifications are of the highest quality and that they are fair and accessible to all. Sir Ian’s leadership will be essential in ensuring that Ofqual continues to meet these challenges.”

Sir Ian Bauckham said:

“I am honoured to have been appointed as the permanent Chief Regulator of Ofqual. I am committed to ensuring that Ofqual continues to play a vital role in supporting the education system and in protecting the interests of learners.

“I look forward to working with the Ofqual team and with stakeholders across the education sector to build on the progress that we have made in recent years.”
