Towards a Common Future: Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights for All
Minister Dodds’ remarks
On 7th February 2025, Minister for Health Robin Swann delivered remarks at the launch of the new UK Aid strategy on sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR). The strategy sets out the UK’s commitment to ensuring that all people, regardless of their gender, sexual orientation or disability, have access to the SRHR services they need.
In his speech, Minister Dodds said:
“I am delighted to launch the UK’s new Aid strategy on sexual and reproductive health and rights. This strategy is a commitment from the UK to ensure that all people, regardless of their gender, sexual orientation or disability, have access to the SRHR services they need.
“SRHR is essential for achieving gender equality and empowering women and girls. It is also essential for reducing poverty and improving health outcomes.
“The UK has a long history of supporting SRHR around the world. We are proud to be a leading donor to the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, and we are committed to ensuring that SRHR is a central part of our development programs.
“This new strategy will build on our existing work and will focus on four key areas:
- Increasing access to SRHR services
- Improving the quality of SRHR services
- Empowering women and girls
- Preventing violence against women and girls
“We believe that this strategy will make a real difference in the lives of millions of people around the world. We are committed to working with our partners to achieve our goal of a common future where all people have the right to make choices about their own bodies and lives.”
The new UK Aid strategy on SRHR is a welcome development. It is a clear statement of the UK’s commitment to ensuring that all people have access to the SRHR services they need. The strategy is ambitious, but it is achievable. With the support of our partners, we can make a real difference in the lives of millions of people around the world.
