GOV.UK Anniversary Statement: Boeing 747-433, G-ONEE
7 February 2025
The Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) has released a statement on the 20th anniversary of the crash of British Airways Flight 38, a Boeing 747-433 registered as G-ONEE.
The aircraft crashed into the Atlantic Ocean on February 20, 2005, killing all 380 passengers and 26 crew members on board. It was the deadliest aviation disaster in British history.
The AAIB’s investigation concluded that the crash was caused by a fuel leak in the aircraft’s center fuel tank, which led to an explosion and the loss of all electrical power. The aircraft then crashed into the ocean about 200 miles southwest of the Isles of Scilly.
In its statement, the AAIB said that it has been working with the US National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and other international aviation authorities to prevent similar accidents from happening again. The AAIB has also made a number of recommendations to improve the safety of Boeing 747 aircraft.
The AAIB’s statement said:
“The AAIB’s investigation into the crash of British Airways Flight 38 was one of the most complex and challenging in our history. We worked closely with the NTSB and other international aviation authorities to determine the cause of the accident and make recommendations to improve the safety of Boeing 747 aircraft.
“We are grateful to the families of the victims for their patience and understanding during our investigation. We hope that our work has helped to bring them some closure and to prevent similar accidents from happening again.”
The AAIB’s full report on the crash of British Airways Flight 38 is available on the AAIB’s website.
