Bridging the divide: General Assembly President on UN reforms and Africa’s digital future
7 February 2025
Reforms to the United Nations, including Security Council expansion, are a priority for Abdulla Shahid, President of the UN General Assembly, who also believes that digital technology in Africa has the potential to transform economies and empower women.
In an interview with UN News ahead of his participation in the African Union (AU) Summit in Addis Ababa, Mr. Shahid, who is from the Maldives, said he would use his first address to the continental body to focus on strengthening partnerships.
‘General Assembly must reform’
The President said that as a Small Island Developing State (SIDS), his country had a deep understanding of the needs of developing countries and Africa.
“It’s also important to state that the General Assembly, which represents all Member States, must be reformed so that its decisions are more representative of the entire membership. That’s why Security Council reform is a priority for me. The expansion of both permanent and non-permanent seats is long overdue.”
Africa’s digital future
Mr. Shahid said he would work closely with the UN Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) and the AU on a “digital transformation” strategy for the continent.
“Africa is a continent with enormous potential. It has the youngest population in the world, and its economies are growing rapidly. But there are also significant challenges, including poverty, inequality, and conflict. I believe that digital technology can help to address these challenges and unlock Africa’s true potential.”
Digital technology can transform economies
Mr. Shahid described digital technologies as “transformative tools” that can be used to improve access to education, healthcare, and financial services. He said they can also be used to create jobs and boost economic growth.
Empowering women and girls
Mr. Shahid spoke about the importance of empowering women and girls in Africa through digital technology.
“Digital technology can be a powerful tool for empowering women and girls. It can give them access to education, employment, and financial resources. It can also help them to connect with each other and share their experiences.”
Challenges
The President acknowledged that there are challenges to achieving Africa’s digital future.
“One of the biggest challenges is the lack of access to infrastructure. Many people in Africa do not have access to the internet or to digital devices. We need to work together to close this gap.”
‘Partnership is key’
Mr. Shahid said the UN system and regional organizations, including the AU and the ECA, have a key role to play in supporting Africa’s digital transformation.
“I believe that partnership is key…I look forward to working with all stakeholders to achieve the digital future that Africa deserves. Together, we can bridge the digital divide and unlock the continent’s full potential.”
