Government of Canada Launches Canadian Genomics Strategy to Drive Innovation and Foster Economic Growth
Ottawa, Ontario – February 6, 2025 – The Government of Canada today launched the Canadian Genomics Strategy, a $1.7-billion investment over five years that will accelerate genomics research, innovation, and commercialization to drive economic growth and improve the lives of Canadians.
“Genomics is a rapidly growing field with the potential to revolutionize healthcare, agriculture, and many other sectors of our economy,” said the Honorable François-Philippe Champagne, Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry. “This strategy will help Canada become a global leader in genomics research and ensure that Canadian businesses are well-positioned to compete in the global marketplace.”
The Canadian Genomics Strategy will support four key priorities:
- Accelerating genomics research: Funding will be provided for groundbreaking research in areas such as personalized medicine, precision agriculture, and environmental genomics.
- Strengthening genomics infrastructure: Investments will be made in state-of-the-art genomics sequencing and analysis facilities across Canada.
- Developing a skilled genomics workforce: The strategy includes support for training programs to develop the next generation of genomics researchers and professionals.
- Promoting commercialization and innovation: Funding will be available to support Canadian businesses in developing and commercializing genomics-based products and services.
The Canadian Genomics Strategy is a collaborative effort between the Government of Canada, provincial and territorial governments, academia, industry, and other stakeholders.
“Genomics has the potential to transform our understanding of the world around us and improve the lives of Canadians,” said Dr. David Naylor, President of the University of Toronto. “This strategy will help Canada become a global leader in genomics research and innovation.”
The Canadian Genomics Strategy is expected to create thousands of jobs and generate billions of dollars in economic activity over the next five years. It is part of the Government of Canada’s commitment to invest in science, technology, and innovation to drive economic growth and improve the lives of Canadians.
