Strasbourg, 03.02.2023 – Europe must be able to defend itself and must reduce its dependencies on third countries, European Parliament President Roberta Metsola said at a meeting with the leaders of the EU member states in Brussels on Thursday.
“I underlined the importance for Europe to take responsibility for its own security, following Russia’s brutal war against Ukraine,” Metsola said. “Europe needs to reduce its dependencies on third countries, both for its energy needs and for its defence. We need more European cooperation on defence to procure and develop our own capabilities,” she added.
Metsola also warned of the risks of disinformation and hybrid threats, saying that they are “a threat to our democracies”. She called on the EU to strengthen its resilience against these threats and to cooperate closely with its partners.
At the meeting, Metsola also stressed the importance of the EU’s enlargement process. “Enlargement remains our best investment in peace, stability and prosperity,” she said. “It is in our interest to keep the door of the EU open to those who share our values.”
The President also expressed her support for the EU’s Global Gateway strategy, which aims to invest in infrastructure and connectivity around the world. “The Global Gateway is a key tool for the EU to promote its values and interests,” Metsola said. “We need to make sure that it delivers on its promises.”
