Minister MacAulay Announces 10 Organizations to Deliver the School Food Infrastructure Fund to Help Strengthen Food Security in Communities Across Canada

OTTAWA, ON – January 31, 2025 – The Honourable Lawrence MacAulay, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food, today announced an investment of $100 million over five years to support 10 organizations to deliver the School Food Infrastructure Fund (SFIF). This investment will help strengthen food security in communities across Canada by providing funding for infrastructure projects that support school food programs.

“Our government is committed to ensuring that all children in Canada have access to healthy and nutritious food,” said Minister MacAulay. “The School Food Infrastructure Fund will help schools across the country provide students with the food they need to succeed in the classroom and in life.”

The SFIF will provide funding for a variety of infrastructure projects, including:

  • Renovating or expanding school kitchens and cafeterias
  • Purchasing new equipment, such as stoves, ovens, and refrigerators
  • Building or expanding school gardens

The 10 organizations that will deliver the SFIF are:

  • Breakfast Club of Canada
  • Canadian Hunger Foundation
  • Food Banks Canada
  • Nutrition for Learning Centre
  • School Nutrition Association of Canada
  • School’s Out BC
  • Second Harvest
  • The Stop Community Food Centre
  • YMCA Canada
  • YWCA Canada

These organizations have extensive experience in delivering school food programs and have a proven track record of success. They will work with schools across Canada to identify and fund projects that will have the greatest impact on food security in their communities.

“We are grateful for the government’s investment in the School Food Infrastructure Fund,” said Sylvain Charlebois, Director of the Agri-Food Analytics Lab at Dalhousie University. “This funding will make a real difference in the lives of children across Canada. By providing schools with the infrastructure they need to offer healthy and nutritious food, we can help to ensure that all children have the opportunity to succeed.”

The SFIF is part of the Government of Canada’s Food Policy for Canada, which is a comprehensive plan to address food insecurity and promote healthy eating. The Food Policy for Canada includes a number of other initiatives to support school food programs, such as the Student Nutrition Program and the Surplus Food Rescue Program.

“The School Food Infrastructure Fund is a welcome addition to the Government of Canada’s Food Policy for Canada,” said Nick Saul, President of Food Banks Canada. “This funding will help to ensure that all children in Canada have access to the food they need to learn and grow. Food Banks Canada is proud to be a partner in this important initiative.”
