WTO DG Okonjo-Iweala Welcomes 2025 Cohort of WTO Young Professionals

31 January 2025

WTO Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala today welcomed the 2025 cohort of WTO Young Professionals, a group of 10 outstanding young professionals who have been selected from around the world.

The WTO Young Professionals Programme (YPP) is a two-year rotational programme designed to provide young professionals with a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in international trade policy and to contribute to the work of the WTO.

The 2025 cohort includes professionals from diverse backgrounds and disciplines, including economics, law, development studies, and international relations. They represent a wide range of countries, including Brazil, China, India, Nigeria, and the United States.

“I am delighted to welcome this outstanding group of young professionals to the WTO,” said DG Okonjo-Iweala. “The YPP is a vital part of our efforts to build the next generation of trade leaders. These young professionals bring with them a wealth of knowledge, skills, and enthusiasm, and I am confident that they will make significant contributions to the WTO and to the global trading system.”

The 2025 cohort will work in various departments across the WTO, including the Economic Research and Statistics Division, the Legal Affairs Division, and the Trade and Environment Division. They will also have the opportunity to participate in WTO negotiations and other high-level meetings.

The YPP is a highly competitive programme. This year, over 1,000 applications were received from over 100 countries. The selection process included a rigorous written examination, followed by a series of interviews.

The WTO Young Professionals Programme was established in 2001. Since then, over 100 young professionals have graduated from the programme. Many of these graduates have gone on to have successful careers in international trade policy, both within the WTO and in governments, academia, and the private sector.
