GENEVA (UN News) – UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk on Tuesday expressed alarm at reports of summary executions and other serious human rights violations in Sudan, following the reported killing of nine people and the wounding of dozens of others.
“I am deeply concerned by the use of excessive force and arbitrary detention against protesters and other civilians in Sudan,” Mr. Türk said in a statement. “Reports of summary executions, enforced disappearances and other grave human rights violations are deeply alarming.”
The High Commissioner called on the Sudanese authorities to conduct a thorough, impartial and transparent investigation into the reported violations and to hold those responsible accountable.
“The authorities must respect the right to peaceful assembly and freedom of expression, and refrain from using excessive force against protesters,” he said.
Mr. Türk also called for the immediate release of all those arbitrarily detained, and for an end to the use of violence and intimidation against human rights defenders and journalists.
“The people of Sudan have the right to participate in the governance of their country without fear of reprisals,” he said. “I urge the authorities to engage in genuine dialogue with all stakeholders to address the root causes of the current crisis and to find a peaceful solution.”
The High Commissioner also expressed concern at the reported use of sexual violence against women and girls during the protests.
“I call on the authorities to investigate these reports and to ensure that the perpetrators are held accountable,” he said. “Sexual violence is a serious crime that has no place in any society.”
Mr. Türk reiterated his call for an independent international investigation into the human rights violations that have taken place in Sudan since the military takeover on 25 October 2023.
“The people of Sudan deserve justice and accountability for the crimes that have been committed,” he said. “An independent international investigation is essential to ensuring that those responsible are held accountable and that justice is served.”
The High Commissioner also called on the international community to support the Sudanese people in their struggle for democracy and human rights.
“The people of Sudan have shown great courage and resilience in the face of adversity,” he said. “The international community must stand with them and support their aspirations for a better future.”
