CRTC takes action to help bring fibre Internet to three communities in British Columbia and the Yukon
Ottawa, January 30, 2025 – The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) today announced that it has approved funding to help bring high-speed fibre Internet to three communities in British Columbia and the Yukon.
The funding will be provided through the CRTC’s Broadband Fund, which was established in 2021 to help connect all Canadians to high-speed Internet. The fund provides grants and loans to telecommunications companies to help them build and upgrade their networks in underserved areas.
The three communities that will receive funding are:
- Atlin, British Columbia
- Carcross, Yukon
- Mayo, Yukon
These communities currently have limited or no access to high-speed Internet. The funding will allow them to connect to fibre networks, which will provide them with much faster and more reliable Internet service.
“Access to high-speed Internet is essential for Canadians in all parts of the country,” said Ian Scott, Chairperson of the CRTC. “This funding will help bring much-needed broadband service to these three communities, and will make a real difference in their residents’ lives.”
The CRTC’s Broadband Fund is a key part of the government’s plan to connect all Canadians to high-speed Internet. The fund has already helped to bring high-speed Internet to over 1 million Canadians in underserved areas.
The CRTC is committed to working with telecommunications companies and other stakeholders to ensure that all Canadians have access to affordable, high-quality broadband service.
