Governments of Canada and Saskatchewan invest in livestock and forage research
January 29, 2025
The Governments of Canada and Saskatchewan are investing in livestock and forage research to support the sustainable growth of the agricultural sector in the province.
The Honourable Marie-Claude Bibeau, federal Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food, and the Honourable David Marit, Saskatchewan Minister of Agriculture, made the announcement today at the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon.
The $10 million investment will support research projects at the university over the next five years. The projects will focus on improving the productivity and sustainability of livestock and forage production systems in Saskatchewan.
“This investment will help to ensure that Saskatchewan’s livestock and forage sector remains competitive and sustainable for years to come,” said Minister Bibeau. “By investing in research, we are investing in the future of our agricultural sector and the communities that rely on it.”
“This investment will support research that will help our producers to improve the efficiency and profitability of their operations,” said Minister Marit. “It will also help to ensure that our livestock and forage sector is environmentally sustainable.”
The research projects will be led by Dr. John McKinnon, a professor in the University of Saskatchewan’s Department of Animal and Poultry Science.
“This investment will allow us to conduct cutting-edge research that will have a real impact on the livestock and forage sector in Saskatchewan,” said Dr. McKinnon. “We are grateful for the support of the federal and provincial governments.”
The projects will focus on a variety of topics, including:
- Developing new and improved forage varieties that are more resistant to pests and diseases
- Improving the efficiency of livestock production systems
- Reducing the environmental impact of livestock production
- Developing new products and technologies that add value to livestock and forage products
The results of the research will be shared with producers and industry stakeholders through workshops, field days, and other outreach activities.
The investment in livestock and forage research is part of the Government of Canada’s $3 billion Agricultural Climate Solutions program. The program is designed to help farmers and ranchers adopt sustainable practices that will reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve water quality.
The Government of Saskatchewan has also committed $10 million to the program.
