Brussels, January 29, 2025 – “With the Compass we finally have a pragmatic approach, this is the path that the European Union must take to be more effective and more incisive, above all on issues that really affect the lives of our citizens”. This was said by Minister Urso on the sidelines of the meeting of Competitiveness ministers where the Commission presented the first report on the implementation of the Compass, the strategic document on industrial policy approved in March 2022.
Urso stressed that “Italy is doing its part, working on all the construction sites indicated by the Compass, such as critical raw materials, microchips, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, pharmaceuticals, green economy. We must work together to implement the Compass, and to make the EU more competitive and resilient. We will give our maximum effort because the EU truly changes”.
The Minister then underlined the importance of increasing investments in research and innovation, as well as the need for a more coordinated and strategic approach to industrial policy at European level. “We need to move from a logic of fragmentation to a logic of synergy”, said Urso, “and we need to ensure that European companies have access to the necessary resources to compete on a global scale”.
Finally, Urso stressed the need for the EU to play a leading role in the definition of global standards, in order to ensure that European companies can operate on a level playing field. “We must work to strengthen the European single market”, said Urso, “and to promote the values of sustainability, social justice and economic growth”.
