Vice-President Pau visits Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial
28 January 2025
Vice-President Ursula von der Leyen visited the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial on Tuesday, the 77th anniversary of the liberation of the Nazi concentration and extermination camp.
She was accompanied by European Parliament President Roberta Metsola and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz. They laid a wreath at the Death Wall and visited the gas chambers and crematoria.
In a speech at the memorial site, von der Leyen said that the Holocaust was “a crime against humanity that we must never forget.”
“We must never forget the victims of the Holocaust, and we must never allow such a thing to happen again,” she said. “The Holocaust is a reminder of the dangers of hatred, intolerance and discrimination.”
“Today, we see these dangers rising again,” Metsola said. “We see it in the rise of anti-Semitism, racism and xenophobia. We see it in the spread of disinformation and hate speech. We must not allow these things to undermine our democracy.”
Scholz said the visit to Auschwitz-Birkenau was “a reminder of the horrors of the past and the importance of fighting hatred and intolerance today.”
“We must never forget the victims of the Holocaust and we must always stand up to hatred and discrimination,” he said.
The three leaders also met with Holocaust survivors and representatives of the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum.
Visiting the memorial with senior EU figures is an annual tradition to mark Holocaust Remembrance Day.
