United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has urged the world to “hold fast to our common humanity” as the UN commemorated the 80th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau death camp.
In a message to mark the International Day of Commemoration in Memory of the Victims of the Holocaust, Guterres said: “Today, we recall the horrors of the Holocaust, when Nazi hatred unleashed an unprecedented reign of terror against Jews, Roma and other minorities.”
“We remember the six million Jewish women, men and children who were murdered by the Nazi regime and its collaborators,” he added. “We also remember the millions of other victims of the Holocaust, including Roma, people with disabilities, homosexuals and political dissidents.”
Guterres said that the Holocaust was “a crime that shook the world to its core” and that it “must never be forgotten”.
“We must learn from the lessons of the Holocaust and work to prevent future genocides,” he said. “We must also stand up against all forms of hatred, discrimination and intolerance.”
The UN General Assembly designated January 27 as the International Day of Commemoration in Memory of the Victims of the Holocaust in 2005. The date marks the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest of the Nazi death camps.
