Canada and Northwest Territories Fund Community Resilience to Wildfires
Ottawa, ON – January 24, 2025 – The Government of Canada and the Government of the Northwest Territories (NWT) today announced a joint investment of $10 million to support community resilience to wildfires in the NWT.
The funding will be used to implement a range of measures, including:
- Developing and implementing community wildfire protection plans
- Improving wildfire detection and suppression capabilities
- Conducting wildfire risk assessments and vulnerability mapping
- Providing training and education to community members on wildfire preparedness
- Establishing fuel management programs to reduce the risk of wildfires
“Wildfires pose a significant threat to communities across the Northwest Territories,” said the Honourable Dan Vandal, Minister of Northern Affairs, CanNor and the Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency. “This investment will help communities prepare for, respond to, and recover from wildfires, protecting lives and property.”
“This funding will allow us to take concrete steps to reduce the risk of wildfires and protect our communities,” said the Honourable Shane Thompson, Premier of the Northwest Territories. “We are grateful for the partnership with the Government of Canada in addressing this critical issue.”
The joint funding announcement builds on the Government of Canada’s $2 billion investment in wildfire management over the next 10 years. This investment is part of the government’s commitment to protecting Canadians from the impacts of climate change.
