NASA to Brief Media on Asteroid Sample Mission Findings

January 24, 2025

Pasadena, Calif. – NASA will hold a media briefing on Thursday, Jan. 26, to discuss the latest findings from the agency’s OSIRIS-REx mission, which collected samples from the asteroid Bennu in 2020.

The briefing will begin at 1 p.m. EST (10 a.m. PST) in the von Karman Auditorium at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California. It will also be streamed live on NASA Television and the agency’s website.

Participants in the briefing will include:

  • Lori Glaze, director of NASA’s Planetary Science Division
  • Dante Lauretta, OSIRIS-REx principal investigator at the University of Arizona
  • Heather Enos, OSIRIS-REx deputy project manager at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center
  • Kevin Walsh, OSIRIS-REx project scientist at Southwest Research Institute

The OSIRIS-REx mission was launched in September 2016 and arrived at Bennu in December 2018. The spacecraft spent two years studying the asteroid and collecting samples from its surface.

In October 2020, OSIRIS-REx successfully returned to Earth with a sample of Bennu’s regolith, or loose surface material. The sample is now being studied by scientists at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland.

The findings from the OSIRIS-REx mission are expected to provide new insights into the formation and evolution of asteroids and the solar system.
