Statement by Minister Khera on Lincoln Alexander Day
OTTAWA, ON, Jan. 21, 2025 /CNW/ – Today, the Honourable Kamal Khera, Minister of Seniors, issued the following statement:
“Today, we celebrate Lincoln Alexander Day and the legacy of the first Black Canadian Member of Parliament.
We remember Lincoln Alexander, not only for his historic achievement of becoming the first Black Canadian MP, but also for his unwavering commitment to justice, equality, and public service. Throughout his career, Alexander worked tirelessly to advance the rights of all Canadians, particularly those facing discrimination.
He was a strong advocate for the importance of education and was instrumental in establishing the Ontario Human Rights Commission. Alexander’s passion for community service extended beyond politics; he was a dedicated volunteer and served as the Lieutenant-Governor of Ontario from 1985 to 1991.
As we mark Lincoln Alexander Day, let us reflect on his journey and take inspiration from his determination to overcome adversity and make a difference in the world. Let his legacy continue to inspire us all to work towards a more just and inclusive society.
On behalf of the Government of Canada, I encourage all Canadians to learn about Lincoln Alexander’s remarkable life and to celebrate his enduring legacy.”
