Government of Canada to announce funding under the Substance Use and Addictions Program in Saint John, New Brunswick
Saint John, New Brunswick – January 21, 2025 – The Government of Canada is investing in initiatives to prevent substance use, provide treatment and recovery services, and support those affected by substance use disorders in Saint John.
Today, Wayne Long, Member of Parliament for Saint John – Rothesay, on behalf of the Honourable Carolyn Bennett, Minister of Mental Health and Addictions and Associate Minister of Health, will announce funding under the Substance Use and Addictions Program.
The Substance Use and Addictions Program provides funding for projects across Canada that address substance use issues, with a focus on prevention, treatment, and harm reduction. In Saint John, the funding will support the following initiatives:
- The development of a new youth drop-in centre. This centre will provide a safe and supportive space for young people to socialize, learn about substance use, and access resources.
- The expansion of harm reduction services. This includes the distribution of naloxone, a life-saving medication that can reverse the effects of an opioid overdose.
- The development of a new residential treatment program for women. This program will provide women with the support and services they need to recover from substance use disorders.
- The training of healthcare professionals in the area of substance use. This training will help healthcare professionals to better identify and treat substance use disorders.
“The Substance Use and Addictions Program is a vital investment in the health and well-being of Canadians,” said Minister Bennett. “This funding will help to reduce the harms associated with substance use and support those who are affected by substance use disorders.”
“Substance use disorders are a serious issue in Saint John,” said MP Long. “This funding will help to make a real difference in the lives of those who are struggling with these disorders.”
The Substance Use and Addictions Program is part of the Government of Canada’s $3.5 billion investment in mental health and addictions over the next five years. This investment is the largest single investment in mental health and addictions in Canadian history.
