NASA Marshall Invites Media to Local Day of Remembrance Event

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (Jan. 21, 2025) – NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama, will host a local Day of Remembrance event on Friday, Jan. 27, 2025, to honor the crew of the Space Shuttle Challenger, which was lost in a tragic accident on Jan. 28, 1986.

The event will be held at the Marshall Center’s Activities Building 4200 from 10 a.m. to noon CST. Media representatives are invited to attend and cover the event.

The Day of Remembrance is a nationwide observance that commemorates the seven crew members who lost their lives in the Challenger disaster: Commander Francis R. Scobee, Mission Specialist Michael J. Smith, Mission Specialist Judith A. Resnik, Mission Specialist Ellison S. Onizuka, Mission Specialist Ronald E. McNair, Payload Specialist Gregory B. Jarvis, and Teacher in Space Christa McAuliffe.

The Marshall Center’s event will include remarks from Marshall Center Director Jody Singer, a reading of the names of the Challenger crew, and a moment of silence in their memory. The event will also feature a display of artifacts from the Challenger mission, including a piece of the shuttle’s thermal protection system.

Media representatives who wish to attend the event must RSVP to Jennifer Amburn at jennifer.amburn@nasa.gov by Thursday, Jan. 26, 2025. Media will be required to present their credentials at the event.

The Marshall Center is one of NASA’s largest field centers and is responsible for developing and testing propulsion systems for space vehicles. The center also manages the Space Launch System, which is NASA’s next-generation heavy-lift launch vehicle.

The Day of Remembrance is an important opportunity to remember the Challenger crew and their sacrifice. It is also a time to reflect on the importance of safety in space exploration.
