Membership of new Visitor Economy Advisory Council announced

The government has today (January 20) announced the membership of the new Tourism and Visitor Economy Advisory Council (TVEAC). The Council will provide independent advice to government on the strategy and policy for the development and regulation of the tourism and visitor economy sector.

The Council will be chaired by industry expert and former CEO of VisitScotland, Malcolm Roughead. Mr Roughead will be joined by a diverse group of experts from across the tourism and visitor economy sector including representatives from the hospitality industry, travel and transport, tourism attractions, local government, and trade unions.

The Council will meet regularly to discuss and advise on a wide range of issues affecting the tourism and visitor economy sector, including:

  • The development of a new tourism strategy for England
  • The impact of Brexit on the sector
  • The challenges and opportunities of digital technology
  • The need for a skilled workforce

The Council will also provide input into the government’s annual tourism action plan.

Welcoming the announcement, Tourism Minister Nigel Huddleston said: “I am delighted to announce the membership of the new Tourism and Visitor Economy Advisory Council. This Council will bring together some of the most experienced and knowledgeable people in the sector to advise us on how to develop and grow our tourism economy.

“Tourism is a vital part of our economy, supporting over 2 million jobs and contributing over £100 billion to our GDP. The Council will help us to make sure that the UK remains one of the world’s top tourism destinations.”

Malcolm Roughead, Chairman of the Tourism and Visitor Economy Advisory Council, said: “I am honoured to be appointed as Chairman of the new Tourism and Visitor Economy Advisory Council. I am looking forward to working with my fellow Council members to provide independent advice to government on how to develop and grow our tourism economy.

“The tourism and visitor economy sector is facing a number of challenges, but it also has a number of opportunities. The Council will help us to make sure that the UK is well-placed to take advantage of these opportunities and to continue to grow our tourism economy.”

The Tourism and Visitor Economy Advisory Council will meet for the first time in February 2025.
