THUNDER BAY, ON – The Government of Canada is investing $200,000 in the Thunder Bay winter tourism industry through the Tourism Relief Fund. The funding will be used to support local businesses and organizations in developing and promoting winter tourism experiences.
“Our government is committed to supporting the tourism industry, which is a vital part of our economy,” said Patty Hajdu, Member of Parliament for Thunder Bay-Superior North. “This investment will help Thunder Bay businesses and organizations create new and exciting winter tourism experiences that will attract visitors to our city.”
The Tourism Relief Fund is a $500 million fund created by the Government of Canada to help the tourism sector recover from the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. The fund provides financial assistance to businesses and organizations in the tourism sector to help them adapt to the new realities of travel and tourism.
“This funding is a welcome boost to the Thunder Bay tourism industry,” said Paul Pepe, President and CEO of the Thunder Bay Chamber of Commerce. “It will help our businesses and organizations develop new and innovative winter tourism experiences that will attract visitors from across the country.”
The Thunder Bay winter tourism industry is a major economic driver for the city. In 2019, winter tourism generated an estimated $100 million in revenue for the city. The Government of Canada’s investment in the Thunder Bay winter tourism industry will help to build on this success and create new opportunities for growth.
The Tourism Relief Fund is part of the Government of Canada’s broader efforts to support the tourism sector. The government has also announced a $1 billion investment in the Canadian Tourism Commission to help promote Canada as a tourist destination.
“The Government of Canada is committed to supporting the tourism industry and helping it to recover from the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Lisa MacLeod, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Sport. “This investment in the Thunder Bay winter tourism industry will help to create new and exciting experiences for visitors and support local businesses.”
