Canada Invests in Climate Change Adaptation to Keep Communities Safe in Atlantic Canada
Ottawa, Ontario – January 17, 2025 – The Government of Canada announced today an investment of $100 million over four years to support climate change adaptation and resilience in Atlantic Canada. This investment will help communities prepare for and adapt to the impacts of climate change, such as sea level rise, flooding, and extreme weather events.
“Climate change is already having a real and significant impact on Atlantic Canada,” said the Honourable Dominic LeBlanc, Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs, Infrastructure and Communities. “This investment will help communities adapt to the challenges of climate change and ensure that they remain safe and resilient.”
The funding will be used to support a range of climate change adaptation projects, including:
- Building and upgrading infrastructure to protect against flooding and sea level rise
- Developing early warning systems for extreme weather events
- Implementing community-based adaptation plans
- Providing training and resources to help communities adapt to climate change
“This investment is a welcome and necessary step to help Atlantic Canada prepare for the impacts of climate change,” said Brad Woodside, President of the Atlantic Provinces Economic Council. “These funds will help our communities build resilience and adapt to the challenges of a changing climate.”
The Government of Canada is committed to working with provinces, territories, municipalities, and Indigenous communities to address the challenges of climate change. This investment is part of a broader effort to support climate change adaptation and resilience across Canada.
