Today’s resolution ensures the UN sanctions regime on Libya remains fit for purpose: UK Statement at the UN Security Council

Delivered by Ambassador James Roscoe, UK Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN, at the UN Security Council briefing on Libya on 16 January 2025.

Thank you, Mr President. And thank you to SRSG Griffiths for his briefing, and to Ambassador Lee for the Arab Group statement. I welcome the adoption of Resolution 2850 today, and I’d like to thank Germany, US, and Malta for their work in drafting this resolution, and to all Council members for their support in its adoption.

This resolution updates the UN sanctions regime on Libya to address the situation on the ground and help create the right conditions for a lasting political resolution to the conflict.

The changes we have agreed today will make the regime more effective and better able to target those who threaten Libya’s stability and security. They will also help to prevent the flow of arms into the country, and to ensure that those responsible for human rights violations are held to account.

It is important that we act now, before the security environment in Libya deteriorates further.

The changes agreed today will strengthen the UN sanctions regime and help to create the right conditions for a lasting political resolution to the conflict. This is a necessary step towards achieving peace and stability in Libya.

Thank you, Mr President.
