Next steps for a more efficient immigration system

Press release 16 January 2025

The Home Secretary has today set out plans for a more efficient and modern immigration system, including a new digital border, automated decision-making, and improved data sharing.

The plans, published in a consultation document, will make it easier for people to come to the UK for work, study or family reasons, while also strengthening our borders and protecting the public.

The Home Secretary said:

“Our immigration system is too complex and bureaucratic, and it does not always work in the best interests of the UK. These plans will make it easier for people to come to the UK for the right reasons, while also strengthening our borders and protecting the public.”

The key proposals in the consultation document include:

  • A new digital border: This will make it easier for people to travel to and from the UK, while also improving security. The new system will use facial recognition and other biometric technologies to automate the process of checking people in and out of the country.
  • Automated decision-making: This will be used to make decisions on visa applications more quickly and efficiently. The new system will use artificial intelligence to assess applications and identify any potential risks.
  • Improved data sharing: This will help to ensure that the Home Office has the information it needs to make informed decisions on immigration applications. The new system will allow the Home Office to share data with other government departments and agencies, such as the Department for Work and Pensions and the National Crime Agency.

The consultation document is open for comment until 16 March 2025. The Home Office will then consider the responses and publish a final plan later in the year.

Notes to editors:

  • The consultation period will close on 16 March 2025.
