Service Members Answer the Call in California
January 16, 2025
National Guard and Reserve members from across California have answered the call to assist with the state’s ongoing response to recent storms.
Since the storms began, service members have been providing a variety of support, including:
- Conducting search and rescue operations
- Distributing food and water to isolated communities
- Clearing debris from roads and bridges
- Providing medical care to those in need
“Our service members are always ready to answer the call when their communities need them,” said Governor Gavin Newsom. “We are grateful for their hard work and dedication during this challenging time.”
The California National Guard has activated more than 1,000 members for storm response efforts. They are working alongside members of the California State Guard, the California Conservation Corps, and other state and local agencies.
The Army Reserve has sent two construction units to help with debris removal. The Air Force Reserve has sent a medical team to provide care at a local hospital.
“We are committed to supporting the state of California during this emergency,” said Army Reserve Lt. Col. Michael Johnson. “Our service members are trained and equipped to provide the necessary assistance.”
The storms have caused widespread flooding, mudslides, and power outages. More than 20 people have died as a result of the storms.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims of these storms,” said Newsom. “We will continue to work together to provide assistance to those in need.”
