Government of Canada Invests in the Reforestation of Wildfire-Affected Areas in Northern Ontario
Ottawa, Ontario – January 15, 2025 – The Government of Canada is investing $10 million in the reforestation of wildfire-affected areas in Northern Ontario. This investment will support the planting of 1 million trees in areas that have been devastated by wildfires in recent years.
“Our government is committed to protecting our forests and supporting the communities that rely on them,” said the Honourable Steven Guilbeault, Minister of Environment and Climate Change. “This investment will help to restore these vital ecosystems and provide economic opportunities for local businesses.”
The funding will be used to plant a variety of tree species, including jack pine, black spruce, and white spruce. These species are well-suited to the climate and soil conditions of Northern Ontario and will help to restore the biodiversity of the region.
The reforestation project will be led by the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry. The ministry will work with local contractors and community groups to plant the trees and monitor their growth.
“This investment is a testament to the government’s commitment to environmental protection and economic development in Northern Ontario,” said the Honourable Greg Rickford, Minister of Energy, Northern Development and Mines. “These trees will help to restore our forests, create jobs, and improve the quality of life for residents in the region.”
The reforestation project is expected to be completed by 2028. Once the trees are mature, they will provide a number of benefits, including:
- Improved air and water quality
- Reduced erosion
- Increased biodiversity
- Carbon sequestration
- Recreational opportunities
“This investment is a great example of how we can work together to protect our environment and support our communities,” said Chief Glen Hare of the Whitefish River First Nation. “These trees will help to restore our traditional lands and provide future generations with a healthy and sustainable environment.”
The Government of Canada is committed to working with provinces, territories, Indigenous communities, and other partners to protect and restore Canada’s forests. This investment in reforestation is one of many ways that the government is taking action to address the challenges of climate change and protect our natural heritage.
